Shows I'm excited about: Homeland

Homeland is a slow-moving but gripping tale that follows Nicholas Brody, a US Marine who if rescued after being held captive by Al-Qaeda since 2003, and Carrie Mathison, the CIA investigator who gets the impression all is not what it seems with Brody.
Homeland is a unique series that keeps viewers guessing right till the very end. For most of the season viewers don’t know if Brody has returned as a sleeper agent or if Carrie’s past mental health issues have clouded her judgement. Or are both assessments true?
Homeland not only deals with hard-hitting topics such as religion and terrorists but it also looks at the impact these things have on a modern family. While Nicholas was gone his wife and his best friend began a relationship that could tear the Brody family apart. Meanwhile Carrie is dealing with being under suspicion from her own side.
Homeland is definitely a series to watch. It does take a little while to build up, but before you know it, you’re hooked.
Claire Danes stars as Carrie with Damian Lewis as Nicholas, Morena Baccarin as Nicholas’s wife and Mandy Patinkin as Saul Berenson, Carrie’s mentor at the CIA.
Homeland season two will air on Showtime September 30.

Themes: Claire Danes, Damian Lewis, Morena Baccarin, Mandy Patinkin, Homeland Security, terrorists, Carrie Mathison, Nicholas Brody, Saul Berenson, Showtime, drama

Top Female Characters On TV #2

This entry goes to one Aeryn Sun, my favourite Martian... well okay she's not a Martian because she's not from Mars. But she is an alien, so there's that.

I don't own this image

Aeryn is such an awesome character, in part due to the wonderful actress who plays her, Aussie Claudia Black. Aeryn was raised as a soldier and pumped full of hate for anyone who wasn’t like her, so it’s really a testament to her strong independence that she was able to look past her companions differences to see the truth beneath them. It did take her a while to see past the bias brainwashed into her, but when she did she accepted them and stood by them no matter what.
Another thing I love about Aeryn was that she was very strong and brave, but she was still emotionally vulnerable. This was mostly seen with her relationship with Crichton, but also in snippets with Pilot and Zahn—she never felt that she was worthy of their love and friendship. It was very nice seeing such a strong character be so vulnerable, and even better to see her overcome her insecurities and accept the love that was given to her. Watching her with baby D’Argo Sun Crichton at the end of The Peacekeeper Wars was very beautiful, and I love hearing Claudia Black talk about those scenes.
Only two people voted for Aeryn as their favourite female character on TV on my FaceBook poll, which is curious to me. Maybe there are still a lot of people who don’t know Farscape?
Zoe Washbourne from Firefly is very similar to Aeryn, and I think that she would have been up on my list if the series had a longer life.
Let me know what you think about Aeryn, as well as your thoughts as the who will take out the number one position. I'll give you a hint, it's a bit out of the box. So keep guessing folks.

Top Female Characters On TV #3

It's a sad day when you realise you have made a huge mistake on your blog but nobody corrected you. I guess no one reads these blogs, but it's okay because while it would be nice to have someone read what I write I know I've only been doing this for less than a year, and it's gonna take some time to build up a fan base. The last post I wrote listed Laura Roslin as entrant number 5, but that was Christina Yang. Roslin is number 4.

This weeks entry goes to my third favourite female character on TV: Claudia Donovan
I don't own this photo, but how adorable is it?

Claudia is such a tremendous female character on TV, and it speaks to the intelligence of writers on TV because there are now a lot of flawed characters on TV. Looking back even a few years on TV most of the main female leads are just cookie-cutter perfect. Claudia is fantastic at her job, but she is in no way perfect.
Young Claudia begins her stint in the hit SyFy series Warehouse 13 as a slightly tweeked hacker who kidnaps Warehouse agent Artie to force him to bring her brother back into existence. I love Claudia for this because her brother raised her, he is her only ‘real’ family. When she thought she was going crazy and seeing his ghost floating around, she checked herself into a mental hospital to get some help, but when she found out that Joshua wasn’t really dead she did everything in her power to bring him back.
Even though she has all these amazing abilities, one of the reasons I love Claudia is because she isn’t perfect. Claudia is very confident of her own abilities, and with good reason, but because of her intelligence and way of life she has very poor self confidence around people her own age, especially with males. The limited times we have seen her with young men she is always awkward, scared, and very un-Claudia.
Claudia is also trying to change this and to be a better Warehouse agent. She isn’t going to be a full agent right away---she is only 20---but she is trying to do her best and learning. Every episode, Claudia is moving and growing. Allison Scagliotti is a fabulous young actress who has a big future ahead of her; I only hope that she spends a lot of time on Warehouse 13.
Claudia only got three votes on my FaceBook poll.
So what does everyone else think about Claudia? Does she deserve this spot on the list, or could she be higher? Let me know in the comments... if anyone is reading this :P

Top Female Characters On TV #5

I don't own this photo

Today I'm going back to the top female characters list with the number four entry; Laura Roslin (played by the lovely Mary McDonnell) in the reimagining of Battlestar: Galactica.

After falling into the role of President, Roslin has a lot of hard decisions to make and she has to make them throughout her entire term (and even after). One thing that really stands out to me about Roslin is her unwavering hatred of the Cylons. This might sound like an odd thing, but before I started the series I thought she would be the one to try and help them the rest of humanity see the good in the Cylons, but instead Roslin’s flaw is her distrust for the Cylons and everything that they stand for. Roslin is such a strong character thrown into such horrible situations and she has to suck it up and deal. There are a lot of things that she did that people didn’t like but she felt comfortable in doing them because she was so sure that she was right, that she was helping people.

She is also a very faithful woman, and I really like that about her. I am a faithful woman and I love it when people of faith and belief are treated well and with respect on television. And by that I mean the character as a character was treated with respect even when the character onscreen was being mocked.

Mary McDonald is such a terrific actress, and some of her best moments are when she is playing Roslin. We see her strength and courage when she is being strong, but we also see her sadness and moments of weakness too. Roslin did a lot of things that I didn’t like too much, but she did them with such conviction that I have to respect her for making them.

I forgot to add Laura onto my FaceBook poll, and nobody added her.

Let me know your thoughts about Laura in the comments.

Top Female Characters on TV #5

I don't own this image (but I wish I did!)

I can't believe how long it's been since I've added one of these! I bet you're all going crazy wondering who my top 5 are (or no one is actually reading my blog because no one comments). But anyway I'm going to continue with my list here with the Awesome Christina Yang (Sandra Oh) from Grey's Anatomy.
I don’t like a lot of people to know that I watch Grey’s Anatomy, mostly because the storylines aren’t as in depth or thought provoking as the other series that I watch, but watch it I do, and mostly for Christina. Christina is my favourite character and the main reason why I watch the show. Her character growth every season always amazes me, yet it never seems fake. As much as she’s grown and changed, she is still true to her core self. There are things about her that she will never change for anybody no matter how much they try to make her.
Like every other character on my list, she is strong (are you sensing a pattern here?), but there are times when she has changed for the better. For her love of Burke Christina agreed to a big ridiculous wedding that she never wanted. She lied for him and put her own career on the line for him earlier on in the series, but it was the wedding that really displayed her affection for him. To make matters worse, Burke didn’t realise how much she had changed for him until the last moment, and then decided to leave. Not good for someone who already had difficulties with emotion. Nonetheless, in the later seasons Christina has met and married Owen, who seems to have the unique ability to see through her crap and know when she’s putting up a front and when she’s being honest. I can’t wait to see what they do with her next.
Christina Yang got six votes on my Favourite Female Character on TV poll on FaceBook.
Does anyone else like Christina? Should she be lower or higher on my list?

Top Female Characters on TV---Guest Blogger

Because I know that everyone has different opinions and not everyone watches the same TV as I do, I asked what other people thought about their Favourite Female Character. My friend Sara jumped at the chance. Her top female character is Debra Morgan from Dexter:

5 Reason Why Debra Morgan is awesome:

1-      She Doesn’t Know Everything:

If she’s at a crime scene she doesn’t go up to the body and know everything they need, she gets the coroner, someone whose job it is to know that sort of stuff. When there’s forensic evidence she doesn’t run it herself, she gets a lab tech. This doesn’t make her dense or bad at her job, it makes her a better rounded character and someone you could met in real life and not want to shoot them in the head five minutes into a conversation.
Here’s the thing. I’m trying to be a writer and imagine if I put into one of my stories: my characters were in a sinking ship and the only way to unlock the door to safety was by diving into the already flooded depths to find the key. It would take at least ten minutes. They’re doomed! But, oh, wait. There’s the main female character. And although she never discussed it or mentioned it in any way, shape or form all these years, she spent eight months working as a deep sea oyster diver. She can hold her breath for fifteen minutes! They’re saved!
Who would buy that as an ending? But apparently many now think that if you do it repeatedly it makes a female character awesome. It does not. It makes her irritating and completely fake.

2-      She Knows Her Short Comings:

So what’s a girl to do when she’s not perfect? In Deb’s case she delegates, she learns, and she prioritises. She knows herself well enough to know what she’s good at and what she just plain hardcore sucks at and doesn’t let her pride get in the way. Since she is a homicide detective I find this especially awesome. They mention that she is one of the youngest officers to ever make detective and yet she doesn’t swagger about taking charge when she has no right to. If she needs help she’ll ask for it, and the same goes for her personal life, ego and image be damned.
The writers did this very well seeming that when we first saw Debra she had the drive and intelligence to be a great cop but just didn’t have the confidence. Over the seasons they grew and developed her. She still has shitty confidence in some situations but in so many ways you’ve watched her come into her own.

3-      She Doesn’t Give Up:

When Deb is on a case she’ll be the last one out of the office each night. She will track down any lead, no matter how small, and will devote her all no matter how many knock backs she up against. She’ll shift through mind numbing paper work ask a million defensive witnesses if there’s a glimmer of hope that one will talk to her. And if all the leads run dry she’ll go right back to the beginning to see if there is anything she missed.
I admire that conviction and dedication.
She's had a lot go wrong in her personal life that would make anyone choose a life of celibacy and cats by now, but not Deb. Dear Debra Morgan is willing to go another round and take another leap for love. I only wish I could do that, and I don’t have all that baggage.

4-      She Doesn’t Continuously Bring Up That She’s a Woman:

This happens quite a lot: Writers want to have a strong female character so they set her up in a job that is predominately a men’s domain, and then she or someone else mentions at least once an episode that is does, in fact, lack a y-chromosome.
To me this is particularly irritating since it always hits my ears like they’re saying her mediocre achievements should now be considered awesome because of her "handicap". It’s like they’re trying to justify how her actions could possibly be awesome. Deb doesn’t fall into this category.
Sure, she’s a female cop, she’s also the youngest one there and no one cares. You know why? It’s not because she constantly spots off that she has a uterus. She shows up, she works hard and she gets the job done. And not once have I seen her grandstand about how difficult it is.
My mother was once in the army (she was actually one of the first women who were trained up and eligible to be sent into the battlefield if war was to breakout) and she was posted at a base where she did outrank a lot of the men. After seeing so many shows with so called strong female characters boasting about their trials I went up to her and asked her if it was tough, being in such a position as a woman. She looked puzzled for a second and then told me that it didn’t matter that she was a woman. That all she did was conducted herself in a manner that said ‘I respect you, so you respect me’ and it had never been an issue.  That has always stuck with me. Not just as a girl interacting with men but as a human being interacting with others. Don’t demand more than you’re willing to give, but don’t accept less than what you have given. I guess this is why when writers pull this stunt it always just leaves me feeling offended.

5-      She’s a Survivor:

Emotionally neglectful and absent father.
Under estimated by most people in her life.
Kidnapped and almost dissected by serial killer.
Shot.
Watched her boyfriend die. . .
And she just keeps going
-Give the girl a hand!

So what does everyone else think? Does Deb deserve Sara's number one spot, or is this all Deb-Delusion? Comment below and let me know.

August: Month in review (BEDA #31)

Well, this is the last day of BEDA, I thought I’d have a look back at the month of August.

It started off with a bang with my friend and roommate S’s birthday. We celebrated by decorating the house with balloons, streamers, and post it notes; what better way to wake up? We acknowledged Esther day by buying These Star Won’t Go Out bracelets and by telling our family and other loved ones how we feel. We experienced the elation of finding out that the Internet rumours of Eureka’s cancellation were fake, only to have the knife turned and Syfy revoke their decision just days later.

I invited you into my life and home and told you things.  I went to a male review show and took you along with me to experience the hilarity of the event and opened the doors to my bathroom with a look at my DIY disaster. You danced with me when I celebrated my coffee win and we all laughed when the Rumplestiltskin Once Upon A Time poser was revealed.

August also heralded the introduction of my Favourite Female Character on TV series. There is still my top five to go, as well as some guest posts and special mentions.

In August my ‘Is James really Harry’s father?’ post was still the most popular, followed by Linkin Park quotes Battlestar: Galactica, Book Time! The Night Creatures: Burn Bright, and Sad day for Science Fiction fans (BEDA #9). Most of you still found me through Google searching for Harry Potter references, but Twitter and Gateworld also brought a few more of you over.

So all in all August was a pretty good month. My baby sister turned 20 and my big bro 27. Times are changing and people are growing up. Hugs and kisses all around.

But don’t think because I’m not posting every day that I will forget about you. There are still movies to watch, books to read, and TV shows to talk about. I’ll still be here a while longer yet, if you’ll let me.

So, for my last day I’d like to ask you all a favour. How did you get here? Are you a FaceBook friend, did you find me on Twitter, or were you searching for something and decided to stick around? Leave a comment and let me know!

Top Female Characters on TV #6 (BEDA #29)

Entry number six, and the last entry before we get into my top five, is Donna Noble (Catherine Tate) from Doctor Who...
Ah Donna. I have to admit, I have a soft spot for Rose as a top companion (I know all the bad about her, but I still love her), but Donna is my favourite. In her first episode she was vapid, selfish, and kind of annoying, but by the end we know so much about why she is the way she is. Raised by a picky mother who never seems happy no matter what Donna does, Donna sees that she is needed and that she can do good with one day with the Doctor. What’s even better is that she knows that the Doctor needs someone to look after him, but she doesn’t want to be that person. This is one of few times that someone has actually turned down the offer of travelling through space and time, but she does it with her head held high.
I was a bit worried about her reintroduction after hearing that she is trying to track the Doctor down, because it seemed so out of character for her, and yet they all pull it off so well. Rather than her sitting around waiting for him, she is investigating (and doing a good job) the weird and wacky hoping to run into him. When the Doctors offer is once again on the table, she accepts in a heartbeat, but makes sure her own rules are followed---they will be friends but no funny business.
I can’t help but to compare Donna with the other companions, as I’m sure everyone else does too and it is through this comparison that we see more of her strong points. She loves the Doctor but she is not in love with him. She slaps then hugs when the others rush to hug. She mocks the Doc when others will only see his good sides. But she is there for him and will be there no matter what.
Donna is high on my list because she is strong and confident but she has her weaknesses too. Her upbringing has lead to her having low self esteem despite her confidence. In fact, it seems that she is so outwardly confident to cover up her insecurities. The worst thing is that she has a wonderful and awesome year or so with the Doctor but her memory of this time had to be erased. I wish her most recent stint on the show had been... better, for Donna. I have this image in my head of Donna doing awesome stuff without realising it, but instead they went down a different path. Still the same, and finally in love with a person who deserves her love. I know that Wilf will look out for her, which is good. Hopefully there is an opportunity for Donna to return, or at least we will see her influence on the Universe.
Donna wasn’t one of the original additions to my Who is your favourite female character in a TV series? Poll on FaceBook, and no one else added her either.

Let me know your thoughts on Donna in the comments. And please add who your top five female characters on TV are, and maybe guess who mine are.
